Honorable guests, ladies and gentlemen, good evening,
First I want to thank the judges for selecting me for this award; I want to thank CPAC for sponsoring it, thank my book editor Terry Barker for nominating me. I want to thank my family and many friends for all their support. I feel honored and thrilled to receive this wonderful recognition.
Ten years ago, I started writing poetry. Initially I just wanted to improve my English. People laughed at me. But thankfully, I got a lot of help and encouragement from many writers and friends. Some of them I have never met.
As I continued writing, I found poetry opened a door to an amazing world. I discovered the beauty of nature, the essence of human being and timeless wonders. Some people think writing is a process of self-healing; thus they believe poets are narcissists - they are only concerned about themselves. Is that true? Well, from my own experience, writing began as a therapy to help me through the darkness, then became a way of discovering the world, then an experience of freedom, enrichment and enlightenment. I found the pure and simple mind. I felt happy and peaceful. I then appreciated our Nature more and understood better about life, dreams and realities. So I became passionate to promote poetry and share this kind of love and hope with others. Together with my husband and other poets, we built a literary forum and created an online home for many poets and writers. I understand that Human beings long for the meaning of life. Through the arts we can find it. Art gives a soul to our city, to our society and to our country. So not only do I write poetry, but I also try to spread those messages and make connections with other poets, artists and audiences. I have designed Poetry Alive Education programs and hosted poetry workshops at libraries, schools and colleges. In 2012 I was invited to Vancouver to read my poetry and the host Ms. Sawyer told me that my poetry gave hope to a distressed lady and saved her life. I was grateful to have discovered this meaning and other meanings for my poetry. Although sometimes I still struggle to find a balance between my writing and my IT full-time job, I know I won’t give up. In 2013 I was elected to be Ontario representative for the League of Canadian Poets. I was also invited to be a “living book” to share my personal story with students at the University of Toronto. I am happy that my poetry not only changed me, but also changed others.
Today, standing here, I see a lot of you are successful leaders in communities and in companies. I see you all share your passion and good will to strive to make the world a better place. Good poetry can do that too. Even though I know there is a long way to go, with support and help from you, I believe we can achieve more. We can make a difference in our lives, in our society and in the world. Thank you very much.
