Image/ROM Sash Zapotec, Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca State, 2008-2014. Sash woven on the backstrap loom by Crispina Navarro Gómez (b. 1963) who mixes her own designs with time-honoured motifs of birds, animals and danzantes (dancers with feathered headdresses). Selected warp (vertical) threads are carried over and under groups of weft (horizontal) threads to create raised designs in the cloth. The fringe (warp) is finished as figures.

Image/ROM Ikat-patterned silk rebozo (woman’s rectangular shawl) with knotted fringe, Mexico 1825-1875. Fringed end section of a rebozo which was woven on a backstrap loom with tie-dyed silk threads.
