1. What drove you to run in this upcoming provincial election?

I want to run because I want to continue the work that I had previously done in the community: fight for immigrant workers and small businesses, advance anti-racism in our policies including anti-Asian racism, and ensure that our families have the supports we need to succeed. I have worked on these areas in my prior work as the Executive Director at CCNCTO and for many years as a community and labour organizer, and I want to continue to work on them as an MPP.

2. What qualifications, experiences and perspectives can you bring to the position of MPP?

I bring with me extensive experience working in the community. During the pandemic I lead efforts to support frontline workers in our communities, delivering PPE, essential supplies and ensuring they were able to get their vaccines, benefits and information that they needed. I’ve advocated for paid sick days, increasing the minimum wage and other benefits for workers while also speaking up for small businesses to ensure our economy is one that works for everyone not just the ultra rich. I also lead extensive work around anti-Asian racism pushing our governments and policymakers to address the issue, and spoke out and advocated at the municipal, provincial and national levels to demand our elected officials take action on anti-racism and anti-Asian racism.

3. What challenges do you face as a first-time political candidate? How are you going to overcome them?

Being a newcomer to political candidacy is my strength, not my weakness. I’ve worked with people from different backgrounds to take collective action on projects that have advanced community interest and wellbeing of our neighbours.  I’m not a career politician, I’m not in this just to get elected, I’m here to make sure we make changes at the provincial level that works for our families. I’ve spent many years pushing for accountability from our governments, and If I get elected I will do what I have always done, which is fight for our communities here in Scarborough. I won’t back

4. What are the main issues that you would like to address in your riding?

Affordability, broken healthcare and education systems. It is harder to harder to afford lives for working families here in Scarborough North and Across the province. An NDP government will fight to make sure we building more affordable housing, support first time homebuyers and protect tenants. Healthcare is very broken in Scarborough, we need more language specific support for our healthcare users, funding for healthcare in Scarborough. The liberals and conservatives and oversaw decades of cuts and decline and our systems our broke, an NDP government will fix what is broken. Education—the Conservatives and liberals don’t care about public education and they have overseen drastic cuts to funding. When governments cut education, they are destroying the future of our young people. Everyone deserve quality education regardless of how much money your parents make.

5. If elected, what will you advocate for Ontarians?

The liberals and conservatives have broken the things that our communities rely on from unaffordable housing, to the lack of good jobs, to the rising cost of living, and certainly the education and healthcare our families rely on. An NDP Government will fix the things which our families rely.

6. Immigrant women face double barriers when they try to establish themselves in Ontario: their previous qualifications and experiences are not recognized; the burden of childcare usually falls on them. How will you and your party address this issue?

Immigrant women do some of the most important work in this province, but they have been disrespected and underpaid by successful governments and employers. An NDP government will honour and respect the labour of immigrant women and that means ensuring our credential system is more equitable and pushing forward with strong childcare policies. The NDP has pushed forward key policies on credential recognition and will push forward rapidly for 10$ per day childcare for our families.
