@Varley Art Gallery Arthur Lismer, A Georgian Bay Island (detail), n.d., oil on board, 32.4 x 40.8 cm. Collection of Jack MacQuarrie.
This past Sunday, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham celebrated the launch of its fall exhibitions as part of Culture Days – an annual national celebration that invites people from coast-to-coast to explore, discover and participate in free, hands-on, interactive activities in culture and the arts.
Guests who attended the opening reception at the Varley had a chance to be part of an Artist Talk with local York Region artist Jeff Nye who explored Recovery Rooms, one of the three unique exhibitions on view this season. The Artist Talk included conversations with Varley Curator Anik Glaude and artist mentor Monica Tap, followed by formal remarks and a chance for visitors to enjoy the fall exhibitions first-hand. Jeff Nye’s paintings are physical explorations of loss and memory; his work reflecting upon the ways in which time and emotion distort our relationships to the built environment. Jeff Nye: Recovery Rooms is part of right here | right now, an initiative launched in 2014 by Varley Curator Anik Glaude to foster the work of professional artists in York Region by providing them with exhibition opportunities and ongoing professional development.
As part of this season’s lineup, Varley Art Gallery Director Niamh O’Laoghaire curated her first exhibition at the Varley, called Rock, Water, Tree: Group of Seven Works in the Jack MacQuarrie Collection. This exhibition explores the basic elements of rock, water, tree or building and sky. These are the compositional building blocks that have been used to produce the iconic images of the Group of Seven, offering a vast range of mood and meaning.
The third exhibition on view at the Varley is Innovative Spirit: The Prints and Drawings of Pudlo Pudlat, which explores the late artist’s use of both traditional and contemporary Inuit imagery in drawing and printmaking. Jeff Nye: Recovery Rooms and Innovative Spirit: The Prints and Drawings of Pudlo Pudlat form part of the year-long study of mark making at the Varley. The clean lines and bold colours used by Pudlo Pudlat stand in sharp contrast to Jeff Nye’s layered abstractions. Focusing not on the mark, but on the motif, Rock, Water, Tree: Group of Seven Works in the Jack MacQuarrie Collection considers how landscape elements may be combined and recombined with surprisingly varied results.
All three exhibitions will be on view at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham until January 8, 2017. Admission is free.
