Toronto Maple Leafs urging homeowners to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

The City of Toronto has partnered with the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club to launch an advertising and public education campaign urging homeowners to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

The campaign features Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner and centre Auston Matthews along with the slogans "Test Your Smoke Alarms Monthly" and "Test Your Carbon Monoxide Alarms Monthly."

"The City of Toronto is proud to partner with the Toronto Maple Leafs on this important safety campaign," said Mayor John Tory. "Toronto residents can significantly lower the risk of dying in a fire or due to carbon monoxide poisoning by installing and maintaining working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes."

The digital and social media campaign will continue from now to January 1. Winter is the season when fires and carbon monoxide incidents typically rise in Toronto. The public education component will be carried out this winter and next spring in conjunction with an advertising campaign, with firefighters visiting schools, community centres, libraries, arenas and businesses to convey the message that working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. The campaign includes posters, information cards, digital ads and social media spots featuring the two slogans noted above.

"Joining with the Toronto Maple Leafs for this educational campaign assists us tremendously in reaching residents to remind them that only working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives," said Matthew Pegg, Toronto Fire Chief and General Manager of Toronto Fire Services. "Testing your alarms monthly by depressing the test button is an important step in keeping your home and family safe."

“It has been an honour to highlight the hard work of Toronto’s First Responders throughout my career,” said Darryl Sittler, Leafs Alumni and Community Ambassador. “The Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to partner with Toronto Fire Services this season to help keep our fans and community safe. All of us have a simple, yet significant, role to play in protecting our loved ones over the holidays.”

Through this campaign, Toronto Fire Services encourages residents to understand the true cost when smoke and carbon monoxide alarms fail to work, and the importance of maintaining their alarms. Toronto Fire Services delivers public education programs to the residents who are most at risk, in line with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. Fire Services typically delivers messaging to children, seniors and single-family dwelling owners.
