No clowning around with safety this Halloween
The Regional Municipality of York reminds trick-or-treaters to have fun and stay safe this Halloween.
Whether your child is dressing up as a Pokémon, an emoji or their favourite superhero, follow these tips for trick or treating:
Costume safety
-
Make sure costumes fit securely and are short enough to prevent tripping
-
Face paint makes a great alternative to masks, which can block vision
Creepy clown costumes
-
Keep clown costumes at home
-
Be aware of what’s going on around you
-
Trick-or-treat in groups or with an adult
-
Call 911 if you see anything suspicious or dangerous
Road safety
-
Cross the road at street corners or crosswalks, obey traffic signals and watch for traffic
-
Choose brightly coloured costumes with reflectors and use a flashlight
-
Walk, don’t run and don’t text-and-walk while trick-or-treating
-
Motorists should be aware of trick-or-treaters and reduce speed in residential areas
-
Always drive with headlights on
Treat time
-
Halloween night, invite your kids to empty their treat bags, sort and throw out treats that have been opened or damaged
-
Sneak in some nutrition by offering milk, fruit or vegetables with treats
-
Keep Halloween smiles healthy by having your kids rinse their mouths with water after snacks, floss daily and brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes, especially before bedtime
