A special weather statement regarding a developing fall storm has been issued by Environment Canada. This storm, with heavy rainfall and high winds, is expected to affect Markham and the Golden Horseshoe beginning late tonight and remaining through to the evening of Wednesday, October 28.
While total rainfall amounts are uncertain at this time, they are expected to reach between 25 and 40 millimetres by the time the storm ends. In addition, wind gusts of 70 to 90 kilometres per hour are forecast to develop on Wednesday. These conditions, combined with falling leaves can quickly clog stormwater drains and cause local flooding.
The City of Markham is proactively working to clear road, park and parking lot storm sewers in areas of potential concern. Residents are urged to help keep the storm sewers near their homes free of leaves and other debris by raking the leaves on their property away from the street, and placing them in biodegradable paper bags, open rigid containers or bushel baskets (not plastic bags or cardboard boxes), for bi-weekly yard waste pick-up.
The City also reminds residents to be prepared in case of an emergency; know the risks in your community, have an emergency plan for you and your family, and get a 72-hour emergency kit. |
