Approximately one-third of York Region’s green bin material is avoidable food waste. More than 50 per cent of this comes from fruit and vegetables spoiling before they are consumed. This translates to approximately $1,500 worth of food, per household, put into the green bin, each year.
York Region’s Good Food program helps residents prevent this waste by promoting the benefits of involving families in meal planning, shopping and cooking to avoid purchasing more than is required.
Through meal planning tips, online resources, food storage guidelines and advice for managing leftovers, the Good Food program will help York Region achieve a 15 per cent reduction in food waste by 2031.
