多伦多大学华裔毕业生闫星伊去年12月在寒风中站在多伦多街头一周，举着一块广告牌求职，希望获得广告和营销业的工作。

 

媒体报道了她的求职故事。她在LinkedIn上分享了她的求职故事后，有人向她介绍了一个工作职位的信息。面试一周后，她获得了工作。

 

在上街求职后的一个多月里，她总共经历了15次面试。这位来自中国大连的留学生，在第15次面试后，如愿在一家媒体行销公司获得了一份工作。

 

获得工作后，她在脸书上分享了题为《我如何在街头找到了工作》的求职故事。她最后总结道：“我想鼓励那些有梦想的人。实现梦想的方式在别人看来可能有些争议，但结果可能让人喜出望外。做选择很难，但你尽管闭上眼，坚定地去做！这样做，可能不能让你的生活完美，但可以令你的生活完整，因为你尝试了，而别人没有。我保证，如果你尽情地活一回，你会感到开心和自豪！”

 

她相信：

“世上无难事，只要肯登攀。”

因为路是靠人走出来的。

 

How I Found My Job on the Street

Perhaps you have heard about my story of how I took my job hunting to the street for 7 days with a sign "U OF T GRAD FOR HIRE, TAKE MY RESUME & GET A FREE XMAS GIFT" in the past December. Now finally after around 15 interviews, I am proud to say that I found the job and I did break into the world of marketing/advertising. On January 26 2015, I started to work at Reprise Media, which is a part of IPG Mediabrands.

 

1. How I got this job?

 

After the media exposure, I really appreciated that I received many opportunities of working in general marketing but I felt my heart was more in the marketing/advertising agencies.

 

However, during the past month some ad agencies actually experienced a hiring freeze because of the recent economic downturns. I became a little anxious about whether I could break into the agency field or not.

 

After I wrote my job hunting story on LinkedIn and got shared by readers, I got contacted and referred to a marketing professional to network. After a week, I was referred by him to apply a job opening in IPG Mediabrands. I went to the interview and after a week I received the job offer.

 

2. Some lessons I learned from this experience and wish to share with you :)

 

When I stood in the cold on the street to hand out resumes and could barely feel my toes after standing for a while, I raised my head up to see those tall and shiny buildings surrounded me, I made a promise to myself, one day I would have my own spot in one of those buildings.

 

I was glad that I tried a different way though the way might (have) seemed a bit controversial. Yes I have received both support and criticism on the street. One comment I got when I was on the street was to "go home because you are humiliating yourself by begging a job on the street and you are never going to get a job through this way". I did feel sad but the desire was so strong that I just could not give it up. Also, I really wanted to say a BIG thank you to those who supported me because I could not go this far without your support!

 

Finally I want to encourage all the people who have their dreams and the ways to achieve those dreams might seem a bit controversial from others' perspectives and the results would be unpredictable. Choices were hard to make at this point but just close your eyes and do it! Your life might not be perfect by doing this but at least your life would be complete because you tried for yourself not for others.  I guarantee you will feel good and be proud of yourself for living for yourself once!
