Markham’s municipal election is just six weeks away. Today, the City of Markham reminds residents that Markham is one of the few municipalities offering online voting in the upcoming municipal election on October 27, 2014. Early online voting offers the convenience of voting from your computer. It’s recommended to beat the Election Day rush, avoid rush hour and a car trip to the polls, which is good for our air. Online voting also saves time by eliminating the need to carve out a portion of your day to visit a polling station in-person.
Important Dates:
All eligible voters are able to vote during the Early Voting Period from October 17-23, 2014, and if voters choose to vote online, they must be on the Voters’ List and registered for online voting by Thursday, October 16, 2014.
Watch Your Mailbox:
Once voters are on the List, they’ll receive a Voter Information Package (VIP) letter in the mail with an online Registration PIN and instructions on how to complete the online voting registration process. Each voter also requires a unique email address to participate in Internet Voting.
Who can Vote?
In order to be able to vote, individuals must first determine their eligibility.
As of Voting Day, voters must:
o Be a Canadian Citizen; and
o Be at least 18 years of age; and
o Be a resident of Markham or the owner or tenant of land in Markham, or the spouse of such a person; and
o Not be prohibited from voting by Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act or other legislation.
Get on the Voters’ List:
Electors must also confirm they’re on the Voters’ List, which can be done by visiting MarkhamVotes.ca and using the Voters’ List Lookup Tool. If their Voters’ List information needs to be added or updated, this can be done by speaking to the library staff at any Markham Public Library branch or by visiting the Markham Civic Centre at 101 Town Centre Blvd with proper photo identification. Voters who wish to vote online, must be on the Voters’ List and registered for online voting by Thursday, October 16, 2014.
